Ten people were detained in the southwestern province of Yunnan on suspicion of killing a large panda and trading its meat, reports China Daily. It is assumed that the suspects killed the animal in the city district of Zhaotong. Three of the detainees had already been taken to the police, local authorities confirmed. The police confiscated the skin, skull and bones, as well as 10 kg of panda meat. The animal was an adult female. According to the Forestry Department of Yunnan, in December 2014 a predator killed a sheep belonging to a man named Van. A man with his brother and a hunting dog went on the trail. On the slope of the hill, he noticed, as he said, "a large animal" and fired.
Only after that he saw that before him was a panda. The wounded beast climbed a tree, and Van again fired. Later, Wang sold the carcass and paws of the animal to a man named Lee. After that, the meat changed hands five times. Pandas did not appear in Yunnan for several centuries (the main habitat is the province of Sichuan ). However, after this incident, the Forestry Officers investigated the site of the incident and concluded that the area is suitable for pandas.
