A Strategic Cooperation Agreement to Promote Smart Tourism was Finalized between Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and School of Manufacturing Science and Engineering of the Southwest Uni

Recently, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (hereinafter referred to as “the Base”) and the School of Manufacturing Science and Engineering of the Southwest University of Science and Technology signed a Strategic Cooperation Framework Agreement, with a view to cooperate with each other in building smart tourism projects, researching and developing panda tourism robot products and panda culture-oriented tourism products, declaring any scientific and technological project, establishing a practice base for university students, etc.

To Promote Smart Tourism with Artificial Intelligence +

To build “smart tourism” is one of the key cooperation points for both parties. In the “2017 Chinese Tourism City Ranking” published recently, Chengdu is on the list, and the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, as the most famous protection and research organization for rare and endangered wildlife (including giant pandas) in the world, also comes out at the top of tourists’ destination ranking list. According to the latest data from January to July 2017, the Base has received tourists a total of 2.58 million person-times, a year-on-year increase of 59.4%. Of these tourists, nearly 80% were from places outside Sichuan. Facing the larger and larger tourist volume and the higher and higher tourist requirement level, the Base wishes to improve its services by intelligent means, thus providing more convenient and personalized services for its tourists.
Dr. Zhang Zhihe, Director of the Base, said, “We shall rely on modern science and technology to develop tourism industry rapidly and healthily,” “Educational tourism is just a part of our functions. We wish that artificial intelligence can link giant panda’s protection and breeding, giant panda culture, giant panda-related science popularization education and other elements, so as to serve the public in a more efficient and convenient manner.”
Zhuang Tianhui, Party Secretary of Southwest University of Science and Technology, indicated that the big data technology strength of Southwest University of Science and Technology could help the Base to change its tourists into “users”. Consequently, after online data accumulation and computation, tourists’ eating, living, traveling, purchase and recreation in the Base all can help the Base to make forward-looking decisions and analysis and provide more accurate and personalized services for its tourists.

Artificial Intelligence Robot with Panda Culture Characteristics

“At present, there is a high degree of homogenization of tourism cultural products and a lack of high-end scientific and technological products.” Cai Yong, Dean of the School of Manufacturing Science and Engineering of the Southwest University of Science and Technology, thought many tourism products in current market were seriously homogenized due to mutual creativity plagiarism and a lack of high-end scientific and technological products. An important content of the Agreement is that both parties will jointly research and develop panda tourism robots. So far, they have developed a kind of pandas’ intelligent service robot with proprietary intellectual property rights and a small quantity of such robot has been used on the Base. This product not only has great panda culture characteristics in terms of appearance design, but also can naturally exchange and interact with human beings, connected devices and the working environment and autonomously adapt to complex task and dynamic environment. It has functions such as automatic following, voice input and computation, recreation, and cyclopedia-based questions and answers.
In addition to relevant tourism support projects, the robots with panda culture characteristics jointly developed by both parties will be applied to office services, home services and even Internet of Things and so on, as planned.
According to the Agreement, the Base and the Southwest University of Science and Technology will also cooperate to develop any internship projects for university students, declare any scientific and technological project, etc. Zhang Zhihe, Director of the Base, stated, “This strategic cooperation will positively contribute to scientific research and protection and educational tourism for giant pandas, so that panda culture-related science popularization and culture industry will become healthier and livelier.”
