Penguin brutally attacked and left dripping in blood in ''protected'' area

A penguin has been brutally attacked and left dripping in blood after a group of men entered a fenced off area in the middle of the night.

The injured penguin was discovered by a member of volunteer group Earthcare St Kilda in Melbourne, inside an area designed to protect the birds.

The sick attack is believed to have been carried out just before 1.30am on Friday. The volunteer group wrote on their Facebook post: Words cannot describe the horror of this. continue read below .

‘Those who delivered the attack are very sick, gutless, criminal who should not be at liberty in our community’ The penguins in St Kilda are protected native wildlife and a popular tourist attraction.

Only two weeks ago, tourists saw a young man kick a penguin repeatedly inside the fence. Its dead body was later discovered and reported to police. Chris Hardman, Parks Victoria’s Melbourne regional director, said St Kilda are looking at ways to better protect the colony.

He said: ‘We’ve done some preliminary planning to look at how we could manage the site including fencing, a controlled entry point, and establishing a viewing platform that separates people and penguins.’ The picture of the penguin has upset many on social media, with people calling the attackers ‘sick’. Valentina La Piana said: ‘Such treachery! I can’t believe anyone would want or could harm such small and defenceless creatures.

‘It makes me sick to my stomach and makes my blood boil! With so much surveillance surely theses barbaric thugs will be caught and when they do.’ Johanna Verbene said: ‘Very sick individuals. Those who egged the perpetrator/s on are equally guilty as ‘accessories’ to the crime.’

Meffia Claire said: ‘This is outrageous, fix the fencing and close the area off immediately. More innocent blood does not need to be spilt.’ Many people are suggesting fencing off a specific area for the birds or completely removing the penguins from the area.
