Meng Meng and her twins will not be visible to zoo visitors for the time being. In contrast to father Jiao Qing, who is not involved in raising boys as a dad
There is still no sign of the striking black and white fur in the offspring. For that they make a lot of noise. They draw attention to themselves with a loud squeak.
Large pandas usually only raise one cub. In consultation with the Chinese panda experts, the zoo has therefore decided to actively support Meng Meng. “There are only 1864 adult giant pandas left in the natural habitat. Each individual young animal thus makes a significant contribution to the conservation of the entire animal species, ”says Zoo Director Knieriem.
Every two to three hours the two are allowed to see mother animal Meng Meng. Then it goes into a warm incubator. The zoo borrowed it from Charité's neonatology.
Panda cubs are only sparsely hairy and born blind. With 186 and 136 grams, the offspring weighs only a fraction of the weight of their mother (about 90 kilos).
There is also the first opinion from politics. Berlin Mayor Michael Müller (54, SPD): "What great news! All of Berlin is happy about these two newcomers and I expressly congratulate Andreas Knieriem and his zoo team. It is inconceivable that Berliners can soon visit the black and white twins without highly professional work and a lot of passion. A big thank you for that and: Congratulations! "
It still takes a while until the young panda can be seen. In the zoo, it is expected that the young animals will pad across the facility from autumn, until then they will stay behind the scenes with Meng Meng. Panda father Jiao Qing (9) has nothing to do with the upbringing. He can still be seen.
The youngsters will probably grow up in Berlin for up to four years, as the zoo announced. Then the young animals would detach themselves from their mother "and leave Berlin for China". After all, the pandas are still Chinese property - this also applies to young Berliners.
